Storm system damages historic properties

TWILLINGATE — The storm system that hit the northeast coast on Nov. 20 and lasted through the next few days took a toll on at least two historic properties in Twillingate. The Masonic Lodge — a building that is around 106 years old — sustained exterior damage to the decorative woodwork on the corner of the building, as well as some leaking around the windows that resulted from wind which gusted up to 144 kilometres per hour driving the rain. New centre to increase food banks’ capacity

Construction is underway to convert the current Masons’ building in Minden into a hub for area food banks and potentially a community space supporting food initiatives. A partnership between the Masons and the Minden Food Bank has led to the creation of the Haliburton County Food Centre with the short-term plan to raise the Arcadia Lodge to create 2,100 square feet of storage space. The long-term goal includes further expansion to include office space, a commercial kitchen, an accessible washroom and meeting space to accommodate not only the Minden Food Bank, but any other organizations working to end hunger in ...
