Tamworth AC sprint star Omolola Ogunnowo has been handed a welcome sponsorship boost from local Freemasons from Marmion Lodge No 1060.
Omolola, pictured receiving her award from Derek Lamb, current Master of Marmion Lodge, has already achieved considerable success.
Last year, as an under-13 athlete, she was ranked number one in the country in the 75m, 100m, 150m and 200m events.
This year saw her move up to the under-15 age group and, despite competing against older athletes, she achieved top 20 rankings in the 100m and 200m, as well as representing Warwickshire in the English Schools Athletics Championships this summer.
Omolola said: “I actively enjoy my athletics and my ambitions include studying at Loughborough University and reaching the Olympics. With hard work and the continued support of organisations such as Marmion Lodge, I aim to fulfil my ambitions.”
Tamworth AC coach, Gordon Densley, pictured left of picture, said: “I am really excited by Omolola’s progress. She is a talented athlete who shows real commitment to her training.
“My task is to help her develop at a steady rate and ensure she isn’t pushed too hard, too soon.
“At this age, no-one can predict what any youngster can achieve.
“However, Omolola has already broken most of GB international Meghan Beesley’s old club records and so we know she has huge potential.”
Commenting on behalf of Marmion Lodge, Mr Lamb added: “Freemasonry has a proud record of supporting youngsters and Marmion Lodge has taken this opportunity to demonstrate that support in Tamworth.
“We look forward to following Omolola’s progress, particularly following her English Schools success.”
Following receipt of her award, some poignancy was added to the presentation when Omolola was surprised to learn from her mother (second from right) that her late grandfather was involved in Freemasonry in Nigeria.
