The second annual Carter BloodCare drive hosted Saturday by the Waxahachie Masonic Lodge # 90 to benefit The Texas Scottish Rite Children’s Hospital received a good turnout of donors.

Lodge Master and lifetime Waxahachie resident Ken Bucker said as Masons, it is the lodge’s duty to help support the Scottish Rite (a higher order of Masonry) Hospital.

“Since the 1920s we have been doing all we can as Masons to keep it flourishing to the best of our ability, so that they have all the resources they need to help as many youngsters as possible,” Bucker said. “We do blood drives every March and November here at the Waxahachie Walmart and are pleased to announce we usually have very beneficial results from the caring folks of this community.”

The lodge’s goal is typically 30 units (pints) at each drive twice a year, to meet the hospital’s need. Donors always receive a special gift from the Masons as well as a sporting event coupon or T-shirt from Carter BloodCare.

“We almost always meet our goal,” Bucker said. “This time we are even giving away these Collector’s Sesquicentennial Coca-Cola Bottles to help increase donations.”

The Scottish Rite Hospital’s Mission Statement is to help improve the lives of children by providing quality care for selected orthopedic and related neurodevelopmental and musculoskeletal conditions. The hospital specializes in helping children from poverty-stricken homes who can’t afford to pay for some of these debilitating illnesses their children are born with (statistics show that over twenty seven percent of families in the greater Dallas area alone fall under the poverty line).

The hospital was founded in 1921 when a group of Texas Scottish Rite Masons recognized a growing need to provide superior medical care regardless of a family’s ability to pay. Through the years, the hospital has embodied the spirit and principles of Freemasonry, expressing the Masons’ love for their fellow man, compassion for the sick and quest to find that which is the most worthwhile.

In addition to these blood drives the Waxahachie Masonic Lodge also gives away two scholarships a year to a senior boy and girl from Waxahachie High school. The local CiCi’s Pizza helps collect donations every Tuesday night if you mention the Masons when paying, 10 percent of your bill will be donated to The Masonic Lodge Scholarship Fund.
